Everton have completed the signing of forward Shani Tarashaj, a Switzerland Under-21 international, on a four-and-a-half-year contract from Swiss side Grasshoppers Zurich today.
The player’s advisers spent a couple of days in Liverpool last week to discuss terms and also attended the Blues 4-3 home defeat against Stoke City in the Barclays Premier League. Talks have since progressed well and the clubs have now reached an agreement for the transfer of Tarashaj to Merseyside.
However, part of that agreement will see the player remain at Grasshopper Club Zurich for the remainder of the season.
Tarashaj 20, can operate as a secondary striker or attacking midfielder and has scored eight goals in 18 games for Grasshopper this season, helping them to second position behind Basel, in the Super League at the their mid-season break.
Tarashaj began the season in excellent form scoring five goals in his first four appearances. He also caught the eye after scoring for Switzerland under-21s during their 3-1 defeat against England last month, in their qualifying match for the 2017 European Championship.
Blues boss Roberto Martinez has moved quickly to secure the highly-rated youngster, once again demonstrating his belief in creating a young hungry and talented Everton side. There were reported to be 6 or 7 clubs in the race for Tarashaj, so it is great credit to Martinez and Everton that they have managed to persuade him that his future belongs at Goodison Park.
Roberto Martinez, in his press conference yesterday, hinted that there was a possibility that no players would be brought into the club during the January transfer window after admitting that he thinks his Everton squad is too big at the moment. However, with the best part of a month still remaining it seems likely that there will be further additions to the Tarashaj transfer once the Blues move a couple of players out of the door.
So another exciting youngster is on his way to Goodison Park and no doubt Evertonians will be interested to see him in action next season in a blue shirt.
